Kanchanaburi (Thai
กาญจนบุรี) is
the largest of the central provinces
(changwat) of Thailand.
Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Tak, Uthai Thani, Suphan
Buri, Nakhon
Pathom and Ratchaburi.
In the west it borders Myanmar.
Boundary
North
- Connects with Myanmar.
South - Connects with Ratcha Buri and Nakhon Pathom Provinces. East
- Connects with Suphan Buri Province.
West - Connects with Myanmar.
The province is located in the west of Thailand. The district
covers the source valleys of the rivers Kwae Yai and Kwae
Noi ("River Kwai"), which merge at the city
Kanchanaburi and form the Mae Klong River there.
Several National
Parks are located in the forests of the mountain area of the
province - the Erawan, Sai Yok, Khao Laem, Khaoen Sri Nakarin and
Chaloem Rattanakosin National Parks are located in the province. The
Thungyai
Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary in this province is also listed in
the UNESCO world
heritage list.

The Death Railway (known also as Burma Railway or Burma Thai
Railway) was a railway built from Thailand to Burma (now Myanmar) by the
Japanese during World War II to complete the route from Bangkok to Rangoon
and support the Japanese occupation of Burma. It was so called because of
the human cost of its construction. About 100,000 conscripted Asian
labourers and 16,000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) died on the project
made up of 6,318 British, 2,815 Australians, 2,490 Dutch and the remainder
from the USA or unknown (Wigmore, p588).

Erawan
national park established
in 1975. The 220 square mile Erawan National Park is protected on
the west by Saiyok National Park, on the south by Salak Phra Wildlife
Sanctuary, on the east by the Kwai Yai River and on the north by the
Srinakharin National park. Its most celebrated feature is the spectacular
Erawan Waterfalls is a 4950 foot cascade that is broken up into seven
tiers according to popular belief, including eighty
species of birds, gibbons, barking deer and rhesus monkey,
